Application for permission to organize the Palmer
State Bank was made on May 13, 1912. The bank opened
for business on June 28, 1912 with the purchase of the
R. E. Best Bank, one of the county's earliest banks.
The Palmer Bank was originally chartered with $25,000
capital stock. Deposits when the bank opened in 1912
totaled $29,098.44 with a total of $54,096.44 in
assets. Dr. J. F. Miller, a Palmer physician, served
as the first President of the bank from 1912 until
1939.
The bank was originally located in an old frame
building on the site where the present branch is
located in Palmer. That first site was one of the
early landmarks in the village of Palmer, having
housed a general store, post office, and grain office
before being used as a bank.
The Palmer Bank is one of the oldest financial
institutions in Christian County and is one of the few
banks that remained open during the depression of the
late 1920's and early 1930's.
In 1992 the headquarters of the Palmer Bank was moved to Taylorville,
IL In 1993, a branch was established in Chatham, IL. On Sept. 6,
2002, the Chatham branch was sold to Illinois National Bank of Springfield,
